The Associated Press: Dems Take McCain Out Of Context On Iraq

“No, John McCain is not proposing a 100-year war in Iraq. … The Democrats leave out a vital caveat. When McCain was asked about Bush’s theory that U.S. troops could be in Iraq for 50 years, the senator said: ‘Maybe 100. As long as Americans are not being injured or harmed or wounded or killed …’ … A troop presence that does not involve Americans being harmed is, by definition, not a war.” — The Associated

Sen. John McCain on Wednesday scooped up a key endorsement from megachurch Pastor John Hagee in San Antonio, and
previewed his general election campaign before a packed house on USAA’s campus. In doing so, he looked beyond former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, a long-shot opponent for the GOP nomination who visited San Antonio a week ago. “I respect Gov. Huckabee’s desire to stay in this campaign,” the Arizona senator said. “I will continue this
campaign, but at the same time I want to tell you that I will begin my efforts to draw the differences between a
proud Republican conservative, which I am, and a liberal Democrat.”

Tyler (TX) Morning Telegraph: McCain Played to His Strengths

Republican presidential hopeful Sen. John McCain played to his strengths on Wednesday, making a case to conservative East Texas that he’s the best choice on the issues of terrorism, taxes and government spending. He didn’t dodge questions in the town hall meeting on issues where he might differ from the Republican party’s conservative base — global warming, for example, or drilling for oil in the Alaska National Wildlife Refuge — but he pointed to the stark contrast between his policies and those of the two remaining Democratic contenders, Sen. Hillary Clinton and Sen. Barack Obama. “They are liberal Democrats, and I am a proud, conservative Republican,” McCain said. “They want higher taxes, I want lower taxes. They want larger government, I want smaller government.”
